Sheffield is the fourth largest city in England with a population in excess of 500,000 (1991 estimate). It must also be one of the most accessible cities in the whole country because of its proximity to the M1, M62 and M18 motorways as well as direct train links to the rest of the country and because of the airport which opened recently.

The closest cities to Sheffield are Leeds and Manchester (in West Yorkshire and Lancashire respectively). However within South Yorkshire there are many towns all easily accessible from Sheffield, these include Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Chesterfield which is actually across the border in Derbyshire.
